Democrats hate Donald Trump.
The left will do anything to stop him.
Nancy Pelosi threw down this challenge to Donald Trump that no one saw coming.
As Black Eye Politics reports:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi formed the January 6 committee with the sole goal in mind of boosting Democrats in the midterm election.
The point of the committee’s hearings is to drive news coverage that focuses on the Democrats’ preferred election message of Donald Trump fomenting a domestic terrorist insurrection to end American democracy as everyone knows it.
But in the last six weeks horrendous economic news in the form of worse than expected inflation, criminals continuing to run rampant on the streets of American cities, and the ongoing invasion at the southern border dominated the headlines.
That led to a shift in fortunes where many political insiders and pundits now expect Republicans to win control of both houses of Congress.
So to shift the debate back to the Democrats’ preferred political terms the January 6 committee voted to subpoena Donald Trump.
The last time Congress subpoenaed a former president was in 1953 and former President Harry Truman ignored the summons.
Donald Trump is likely not to comply with the committee’s subpoena and contest it in court.
But Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram went on-air and laid out how Pelosi and the Democrats could still arrest Trump for not complying with this subpoena.
“It’s very unlikely that the former president would comply with this subpoena. So what do you do? The full House then would have a vote to compel somebody to testify or hold them in contempt of Congress. That is turf that we’ve never gotten to before, to hold a former president in contempt of Congress,” Pergram began.
Pergram explained that Congress had the power of inherent contempt where Congress has the power to order the arrest of a witness that refuses to comply with a subpoena.
In his report Pergram explained Congress has not exercised this power since the 1930s.
Pergram told viewers:
This is pretty rare. And we have to go back to the 1930s. There is something called inherent contempt. Inherent contempt is where Congress executes this on its own. And they really haven’t done this since the early 18th century, the very beginning of the republic, frankly.
The most recent case was the 1930s. There was an air mail scandal and they actually went and arrested, the Congress did, an official from the Commerce Department and locked him up in a hotel in downtown Washington, the Willard, for about 10 days until he complied with the information. So there is an option for Congress to act. And that’s why this is one more big thing to do during the lame duck Congress.
Democrats clearly are growing desperate.
Pelosi and her allies on the January 6 committee hope this political squirrel will distract the attention of the American people from Joe Biden’s record on the economy, inflation, crime and the border.
Liberals pinned their midterm closing message on keeping the idea of arresting Trump in the headlines to try and avoid talking about an economy in recession, a surge in murders nationwide, and the unchecked southern border.
