Liberal comedian Bill Maher wants the Democrat Party to return to common sense and win elections again.
But Maher got some bad news.
And Bill Maher heard one prediction about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that stopped him dead in his tracks.
It’s never too early for the media to begin discussing the next presidential election.
Because Donald Trump is term-limited, 2028 will be the first truly open presidential race in both parties since 2016.
The Democrat Party field is especially wide open, with candidates already maneuvering to stake out their ground.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was a panelist on Maher’s HBO show and Maher asked McCarthy who he thought was the early favorite on the Democrat side.
“And who do you see on the horizon for 2028 in the Democratic primary right now?” Maher wondered.
McCarthy didn’t skip a beat in saying it was New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“Bernie and AOC,” McCarthy shot back.
Whatever one thinks of McCarthy’s political ideology and performance in office, McCarthy does possess a finely tuned political antenna.
Maher knew that and was horrified at what he heard and who he heard it from.
“No,” Maher exclaimed.
McCarthy pointed to the Ocasio-Cortez/Bernie Sanders Road show that is currently drawing massive crowds across the country as Democrats flock to hear the two speak.
“They got the biggest crowds,” McCarthy added.
“Who’s at the top of that ticket, Kevin? Because if it’s not Bernie, he’s going to be vice president and ‘wait his turn?’” Maher asked.
McCarthy said Ocasio-Cortez is the frontrunner as the enthusiasm in the party’s base resides with her.
Not only is Ocasio-Cortez drawing huge crowds even in red states like Idaho, but Democrats are voting with their wallets.
In the first fundraising quarter of 2025, Ocasio-Cortez hauled in a jaw-dropping $9.6 million, more than double her previous record haul.
McCarthy also told Maher that Ocasio-Cortez is in a similar position to Donald Trump when he first began running for president in 2015.
“No, no, it would. Bernie’s been running each time. I’m just saying who’s in the lead right now. … The money is going to AOC. And it’s all small donors. This is exactly where Trump was when no one gave him a chance in ‘15,” McCarthy concluded.

Ocasio-Cortez is the exact opposite of what Maher thinks the Democrats need to win again.
Maher is a critic of identity politics and open borders.
Ocasio-Cortez supports men playing women’s sports and mass amnesty for illegal aliens.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may very well be the Democrat Party nominee for president in 2028.
Bill Maher believes that would lead to disaster.
