Former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy did not win over any new fans at the GOP presidential debate.
Gowdy joined Fox News in going after Donald Trump.
And Trey Gowdy just committed this earth-shattering betrayal of Donald Trump.
During the pregame coverage of the GOP debate in Milwaukee, Gowdy drew up the playbook for host Bill Hemmer about how the other eight candidates who actually showed up to the debate could take Donald Trump down a peg or two.
In Gowdy’s telling, the only path around Trump to the nomination was through Trump.
“Bill, all eight have something in common, they’re behind,” Gowdy began. “They’re behind a lot to the guy who’s not there. So, they hey can quarrel among themselves, but they gotta catch Secretariat right now.”
Gowdy then argued that the other candidates need to attack Trump on the obviously political criminal indictments brought against him by Democrat prosecutors as part of a scheme to interfere in the 2024 presidential election.
The former South Carolina Congressman argued that Trump supporters were somehow dying for the other GOP candidates to go on the attack against Trump.
“You better make the case, same ideas, fewer indictments. I mean, somebody has got to make the case: I’ve got the same ideas Donald Trump has, but you don’t need to worry about me making initial appearances and whether or not I can make bond if I am the president. Unless you make that case to Trump supporters. They’re gonna stay behind,” Gowdy stated.
The opposite is true.
A recent CBS poll found 91 percent of Republican voters want candidates to make the case for themselves and just nine percent think the other presidential contenders should attack Trump.
Donald Trump passed on the GOP debate in large part because he did not want to give candidates he was leading by 40 and 50 points two hours of primetime TV real estate to attack him.
But Trump also believes Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch and other executives want to use the channel as a vehicle to promote Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the GOP nominee and expel Trump from the Republican Party.
Gowdy’s commentary about calling for a pile-on against Trump fit with other anti-Trump sentiments Gowdy’s expressed in recent weeks.
During a broadcast of his Sunday night show Gowdy defended the criminal charges against Trump and brought on a left-wing prosecutor to spout Democrat Party talking points about why these charges against Donald Trump – brought in an election year by partisan prosecutors on behalf of Trump’s likely opponent – are right and just.
Gowdy also supported the type of unconstitutional domestic spying the FBI used to target Trump’s team with FISA warrants during the Russia collusion hoax.
Now with polls showing Donald Trump running away with the GOP nomination Gowdy and Fox News appear to be in desperation mode to stop a third Trump presidential nomination.
