Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz led the successful effort to boot Kevin McCarthy as the Speaker of the House.
Now all hell is breaking loose.
And Matt Gaetz let Steve Bannon in on a dirty little secret that will blow your mind.
It took cycling through four candidates, but Gaetz and fellow conservatives finally achieved victory over the D.C. swamp when the House GOP unanimously elected Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House.
Johnson previously chaired the conservative Republican Study Committee.
And Democrats and the media lost their minds over the fact that Johnson opposed homosexual marriage, voted against writing Joe Biden a blank check for the war in Ukraine, and supported pro-life legislation with no exception.
Johnson thanking God in his first speech to the chamber and saying God’s plan led everyone to where they belonged also made heads explode on the left.
In an appearance on Steve Bannon’s popular War Room podcast Gaetz boasted that Johnson was a vast upgrade over McCarthy and would appeal to all factions of the fractured Republican conference.
“He is sharp. He will be as respected in the homes of our most meaningful, righteous and patriotic donors as he will at the rallies with our most enthusiastic and meaningful activists,” Gaetz began.
Gaetz crowed that conservatives holding out and rejecting establishment Republicans like Steve Scalise and Tom Emmer led to a win for the MAGA movement as conservatives were able to pick the next speaker.
“The swamp is on the run, MAGA is ascendant and if you don’t think that moving from Kevin McCarthy to MAGA Mike Johnson shows the ascendance of this movement, and where the power of the Republican Party truly lies, then you’re not paying attention,” Gaetz continued.
Gaetz mocked the swamp special interests for losing their handpicked servant in Kevin McCarthy and that now Washington would have to contend with an empowered MAGA movement that not only removed one speaker but rejected the establishment’s preferred replacements and forced the GOP to settle on a more conservative alternative in Johnson.
“They are crying, they are hand-wringing, they are bed-wetting over on K Street because we have an honorable, righteous man who is about to take this position,” Gaetz added. “He’s going to do great things for the country.”
Even pundits who hate Donald Trump and his supporters like Matt Gaetz had to give credit where credit is due.
Never-Trump pundit Matt Lewis wrote in The Daily Beast that Gaetz’s practice of confrontational politics – where the grassroots constantly challenge the establishment and call out leaders for their treachery – won the day as Gaetz achieved his goal of pushing the GOP in the direction of Donald Trump’s America First movement.
“[H]ere’s the thing about confrontational politics: It. Never. Ends. Fights are inherently good, because every fight results in you gaining turf. As such, you must always be picking fights,” Lewis declared.
Mike Johnson may or may not usher in a new era of conservative policy-making in the GOP.
But what is for certain is that the Republican Party establishment is now on notice that Matt Gaetz and the MAGA movement hold the power to remove leaders who cross them and install replacements more to their liking.
