Jack Smith carried out Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland’s plan to try and make sure Donald Trump dies in jail.
But then something surprising happened.
And Jack Smith’s plan to arrest Donald Trump backfired in this unthinkable way.
Smith’s dubious charges against Trump under the Espionage Act and for obstruction of justice were designed in part to hurt Trump in the presidential election.
There was some hope in the D.C. establishment that multiple indictments against Trump would bleed out his support among GOP voters as the rank-and-file came to the conclusion Trump could not win.
But Smith’s indictment only served to strengthen Trump’s support with Republicans.
A CBS/YouGov poll showed 62 percent of GOP voters thought Trump had the best chance to defeat Joe Biden out of all the Republican candidates.
The latest Morning Consult poll found that in the wake of Smith’s bogus indictment Trump expanded his lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to 40 points.
Nearly 3 in 5 potential Republican primary (59%) voters back Trump for the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination, up from 55% last week before news of his indictment on charges related to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. https://t.co/zpObC29kvJ pic.twitter.com/m8SoSemroU

Democrats’ real hope was that the indictment would provide rocket fuel for Trump in the GOP primary but that it would repel general election voters who would consider voting for an accused felon a bridge too far.
But even that hope proved to be foolhardy.
The Morning Consult poll found a three-point shift in Trump’s direction from polls taken before the Smith indictment.
Trump now tied Joe Biden as this poll showed Trump performed better against Biden than DeSantis.

The Real Clear Politics polling average still shows Donald Trump leading Joe Biden by 1.8 points.
Trump got a bump in the polls after Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted Trump on fake charges of nonexistent crimes.
Many in the corporate media, Democrat Party, and GOP establishment hoped that Smith’s indictment would finally be the blunt force instrument that severed Donald Trump’s bond with Republican Party voters.
But Americans understand that Democrat prosecutors are waging lawfare against Donald Trump on behalf of Joe Biden.
