Former Vice President Mike Pence keeps hammering away at Donald Trump.
Pence sees it as the only path to winning the GOP nomination.
And Mike Pence pulled one brutal betrayal that will have Donald Trump asking why.
Donald Trump won the 2016 election in large part by campaigning against the failed swamp foreign policy consensus in D.C.
Trump sought to recapture what worked against Hillary Clinton by pointing out that Deep State prosecutors began investigating him in earnest after polls showed Trump’s message of ending the war in Ukraine and putting America first gained traction with the voters.
“It is no coincidence that the ‘deep state’ [a conspiracy term, according to which there is a coordinated secret group in the US that influences public policy – ed.) has haunted me even more since I promised to end the war in Ukraine,” Trump declared.
“When I say yes, I will get a settlement very quickly… I will have a settlement within 24 hours. Standing before you today, I’m the only candidate to make that promise. I will stand in the way of the Third World War we are heading for,” Trump added.
Trump’s opponents in the GOP see this as their opening to appeal to the establishment.
Polls show Mike Pence in the low- to mid-single digits.
There is little appetite among the GOP grassroots for the Bush-era restoration that Pence is campaigning on.
But there is a hearty desire among the GOP establishment and donor class to return to the days of George Bush, Paul Ryan, John McCain, and Mitt Romney.
That’s why Mike Pence is leaning so hard into his opposition to Donald Trump’s call to end the war in Ukraine and instead use the tens of billions of dollars Joe Biden wasted to secure America’s border.
In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, Pence warned that unless Americans wrote a blank check for the war in Ukraine, the United States would have to deploy troops to fight Russia.
“And frankly, I really left more resolved than ever that it is in our national interest to give the Ukrainian military the support they need to fight and to repel this Russian invasion. I have no doubt that Vladimir Putin is now facing profound divisions within his own country and his own military. I have no doubt that if Vladimir Putin overran Ukraine, it would not be too long, Hugh, before the Russian military crossed a border where we would have to send our fighting men and women to fight against them,” Pence began.
Pence claimed he was merely following in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan.
“So I’m a guy who believes in that old Reagan doctrine,” Pence added.
But Pence really espoused the doctrine of John McCain and George Bush by calling back to the false claims they made about the Iraq War to justify risking nuclear war with Russia over Ukraine.
Pence falsely claimed America has to fight Russia in Ukraine so they do not have to fight them elsewhere.
“If you’re willing to fight the enemies of the United States on your soil, we’ll give you the means to fight them there so our men and women in uniform don’t have to fight them. And I’m going to continue to be a voice for that in this campaign and all across this country,” Pence declared.
Ukraine is the biggest flashpoint of difference between Donald Trump and his GOP rivals.
Trump is the only candidate in the race who wants to end the war and cut off the taxpayer gravy train and instead focus on the crisis at America’s southern border.
